Out-Standing Student: A Portrait of Resilience and a Call to Action
By Joshua Emmanuel Chohu (Artraktion)

Today, as the world commemorates the International Day of Education, I proudly unveil my latest work, “Out-standing Student.” This 4×4-foot acrylic-on-canvas painting is more than a piece of art it is a narrative of resilience, determination, and the urgent call to prioritize the education and well-being of every child.

The Story Behind the Canvas

In “Out-standing Student,” I depict a young girl whose face is etched with the determination to overcome her circumstances. Her story is the story of millions of children worldwide—children caught in the harsh realities of economic pressure, conflict, and societal neglect.

The girl, balancing a tray of fruit on her head, represents countless children forced into child labor. Yet, her gaze—intense and focused—speaks of her unyielding hunger for education. Her burden is symbolic of the economic challenges many face, where the dream of going to school collides with the necessity of survival.

This painting is not just art—it is advocacy. It speaks for children who cannot speak for themselves and calls upon us all to rise and dismantle the barriers that prevent them from reaching their full potential.

A Global Call for Action

Child labor, often disguised as a family necessity, strips children of their childhood, education, and future. Millions of children, particularly in regions grappling with conflict, economic instability, and poor governance, face this reality daily. This issue is compounded by disasters, displacement, and systemic inequalities that disproportionately affect marginalized communities.

Through “Out-standing Student,” I aim to amplify these voices and bring global attention to the need for urgent intervention. Governments, NGOs, and communities must collaborate to create sustainable solutions. From providing free, quality education to implementing social safety nets, we must take action to break the cycle of poverty and inequality.

Art as a Medium for Change

As an artist and advocate, I have dedicated my craft to addressing societal and global issues. Through my paintings, I shine a light on the often-overlooked struggles faced by communities in Northern Nigeria and beyond be it the scars of violent conflict, the impacts of economic disparity, or the plight of vulnerable children.

My work aligns with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including:

  • Goal 4: Quality Education – Advocating for access to education for every child.
  • Goal 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth – Highlighting the devastating effects of child labor.
  • Goal 10: Reduced Inequalities – Addressing disparities faced by disadvantaged children.
  • Goal 17: Partnerships for the Goals – Emphasizing the importance of collective action to overcome global challenges.

Art is not just a medium of expression; it is a catalyst for change. It bridges the gap between emotions and action, urging viewers to empathize and act.

Join the Movement

I invite well-meaning individuals, organizations, and policymakers to collaborate in creating a world where no child is denied their right to education. Let us become champions for education, defenders of children’s rights, and agents of change. Together, we can build a brighter future.
